The inspiration for my submission to Elam School of Fine Arts in my young adult life was Muriwai. It inspired me to use many mediums and textures and express how the elements effected me. Music, business, babies and travel years took centre stage until in 2014 I rekindled my passion for painting. This work for Turangawaewae uses multiple media including paint, pencil , stencilling, screen printing and fabric. My love for working with many mediums and on different textures is one of the “patches” that make up Turangawaewae for me. The rich textures of my environment.
“Patchwork Place” expresses how it feels to live somewhere as an adult , a mother , a wife, a GROWN UP now…… having departed that place as a young adult, explorer, adventurer, ….. how life is different but the PLACE is the same. Life is like a patchwork of memories, experiences and enjoying the now. A patchwork of remembering the thrill and freedom of being a teenager on Muriwai beach and now the joy and deep gratitude of playing on this beach with my children.
