Australian born and raised on Taranaki shores, Tanya Blong graduated in 2006 from Hungry Creek Art and Craft School with a major in Painting and Sculpture. She exhibits regularly and her work is held in collections in New Zealand and internationally.
Known for her ongoing painted series “The Bathers” the work is suggestive of a mottled memory of time and place. It evokes hot, heady summers and the intoxication of the tropics. The broody narrative hosts a suite of dark females, cloistered at waters edge, idylic and inviting, it also hold an undercurrent… a tension.
It is not just the elusive bygone era that Blong is addressing but the celebration of painting. The laying down of colour upon colour, the marriage of light and dark. It is this juxtaposition that conveys emotion and gives the viewer a sense of inclusion – or perhaps exclusion.
