This work In Sync and In Touch was developed through a ritual of observing the sunrise, sunset and tide. Over a series of months, I spent many dusks watching the sunset and many mornings watching the sunrise, every time always different from the last. I closely followed weather patterns, the timing of tides, the position of the sun, the size and direction of the swell and the phases of the moon. I gained an in-depth understanding of what was happening in the cosmos and how that affected the earth’s conditions. The work now manifests as an installation involving moving image and sound. All facets of the work reflect the cyclic rhythm of the natural world and speak to the entangled nature of our ecosystem. To understand the natural processes observed during these moments, I adopted the methodologies of an ecologist, a meteorologist, an environmentalist and a philosopher. Oscillations, synergies, diffraction patterns, orbital movement, and ebb and flow all inform the mode of making. It is about using the earth’s natural tempo to guide the decisions.
